Hi there!

I hope everyone is doing well in the beginning of the breeding season!

Here is my story so far:

I put 1.1 together on 1st of september, she was obviously developing follicles.

The male tried to mate immediately, but had visual succes after two months. I observed some swelling and this week she ovulated IMO. She was on the heat mat, which is beneath her hiding place. So I couldnt see it very well, but saw muscle contractions...

But here is the Q:

I always check the bodytemps, and I observed something that makes me wonder. Her bodytemperatures are normally around 80F, during the probable ovulation and two days after it was 88-90F. So thats normal I think.

Right now, the 3rd day after ovulating, she doesnt stay on the hotspot, and her bodytemps lowered back to 80F. So that makes me wonder:

How long does it take after the ovulation for the female to thermoregulate?

And another sub Q:

When does the actual fertillization take place? It must be after the ovulation for sure, but is it immidiatly after, or is it possible that it takes a few days/weeks?

I hope you can tell me, thanks!

You should notice thermoregulation regularly regardless of being gravid. But with that said I am assuming you mean how long until she will attempt to maintain a certain temp (I believe 88 degrees to be the most commonly mentioned temp I've noticed) if that is what you mean, you will see it right off, but keep in mind just because a female is gravid doesn't mean she will act exactly like the books, forums, previous experiences say.

OK, I've been thinking about this question for a while. I actually don't know for sure when they start thermoregulating to maintain temps for gestation, but.... I have a theory. It's probably not correct or even the best theory, but here it is.

I think that boas will thermoregulate their body temps for gestation "after" they've finished ovulating.

Now sometimes a boa will have 1 massive ovulation and be done. Then they'd have to maintain their body temps for gestation right away.

Sometimes they have 2 seperate ovulations. That means if they one 1 and the next one comes right away, they'd start after the second one comes.

Now if they have 1 ovulation and the second one doesn't come for a week or even 3 weeks later, they wait to maintain temps for gestation until after the second one. Even if it takes a fairly long time for the second one to occur. That way when they give birth all the babies are fully developed when they pop out.

If they started maintaining temps after the first ovulation and the second one came 2 or 3 weeks later... some of the babies would be more further along in developement. Then when the birth happened they'd have half fully developed babies and half preemies.

That's why I think they wait to thermoregulate for gestation until after they're completely finished with the ovulations. I also think that's why some boas seem to have much longer gestation periods than others. It's because sometimes they wait for that last ovulation to start the gestation process.

Well, that's my theory. I don't know if it makes sense, but that's about all I can come up with. :)
