Was curious to know what is the longest you have observed, between follicular development, and actual ovulation?

What I'm getting at is I have this female I was going to pair my friends Salmon with this season. Back on Aug 20, I noticed a fullness to her, though I have not fed her in two weeks. I looked her over good, and to me it looked like a pre-ovulation swell along the whole bottom 2/3 of her body. I called my friend to let him know we probably missed our opportunity, cuz his male wasn't here yet, and no time for quarantine left, she'll likely reabsorb the ovum.

I paired MY Salmon DH with My albino, as that's the pairing that I wanted to do this year, the other girl was just a "let's see what happens" kind of thing. But on Oct 13, I saw she was still looking sorta full like, so I put My Salmon DH in with her, just to see if any interest. In 5 minutes, he was attempting to lock up with her.

So, rather than playing the "move the male back and forth" routine, I put the Salmon and the other female in the bigger cage with My albino female. He continued his thing just fine, switching between girls, and on Nov. 2, while he was locked up with her, I notice another puffing up of her lower 2/3rds, but not quite the ovulation I am used to seeing.

The male soon lost interest in her, and she went off food, and she shed on Nov 22, and has been coiled over the heat ever since. Am I to assume she held the follicles for 3 months before ovulating? If I went with the second swell as an ovulation, the shed timing is right. Here she is now...

So I am curious, what your experiences have been. Can they develop follicles and hold them for lengths of time before deciding to ovulate, or reabsorb them?

Thanks for looking

All you can do is wait and see what happens.

With boas you really can't, "expect" anything. You can see all the swellings. See the male breed and lose interest. Then you have to wait. Lots of things can happen in between ovulation and birth. Hopefully you get the desired results. You just won't know until she gives birth.

Hopefully your breeding season will have a very happy ending. :)

Yeah, I'm pretty aware of that much. I was more interested in the length of time thing mentioned above. How long have you noticed between the pre-ov swell, and the actual ovulation? Whats the longest you have seen between them?

I have a curious mind, and like to absorb all the corney little details I can get. I'm pretty observant, and it just seemed like longer than usual had passed. Figured she would have reabsorbed them. But the signs say different for now.

Thanks for the reply.

Mine go 7 to 29 days, between pre-ov and ovulation. The longest was 29 days. :)

Of course, every boa is different. Some might be able to have a pre-ov swell "long" before the actual ovulation. Maybe they just need the male in there to stimulate that final ovulation.

So, you really can't go by what other boas have done. You have to go by what your boa does.

See, that's more like what i am used to seeing. I've had females swell up before, then reabsorb about a months later, some have actually ovulated, but still right around a month later, maybe 6 weeks.

Anyway, wondering what others have observed too. (hint hint Jeff) :D
