Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get some input on what to do in the future with regards to a premie baby boas.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to have my first "bad" litter a few days ago. One of my normal girls had her litter about 3 weeks premature. She did not look good throughout most of her gestation. Especially at the point when other females would "swell" up in the last month or so prior to parturition, she did not seem to "swell" up all that much. Anyway, at that point I kind of figured she'd have slugs. And I unfortunately was correct and she dropped 11 slugs and 7 premies with a lot of unabsorbed yolk. All the premies unfortunately died within hours of being born. My question is: is there anything I could've done to save them or give them a fighting chance at making it?

I've had nice big healthy litters the last couple of years, and so this was a bummer to say the least. Again, this was my first "bad" litter and wasn't really prepared to deal with it, as far as knowing what to do with the premies. After I removed the mother from the enclosure, I left the babies alone for a while but they seemed to be going down hill from the get go. I sprayed them with lukewarm water, and I felt so bad for them that I put them in a plastic shoebox (yolk and all) and put them on some heat. I think this is where I made the mistake, but when I finally decided to move them a few had already passed. Anyway, was there anything I could've done differently, or were these little guys doomed from the start being 3 weeks premature?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Jay

Jay, I am sorry to hear about the slugs and premies. My first litter this year was 15 slugs and nothing alive. The 2nd litter had 3 premies in it like you said I kept them on heat and moist. Jeff Ronne wrote a good bit on caring for premie babies I will post a link to it if I can find it. I saw it on another website but it might also be on here. Something different that I do when i mist them is use hot water. I have found that by the time it vaporizes and lands on them it has had sufficent time to cool to room temp. Of course try it on your hand first but it has worked good for me. thanks Nick Stone

Nick, thanks for the feedback. I saw that info that Jeff posted regarding premie babies with big bellies full of yolk. I did kind of take some advice from there, which is why I tried to leave the babies alone where they were dropped by the mom for some bit of time. Unfortunately, my premies did not have those big bellies, but instead had unabsorbed yolk on the outside. So really didn't know what to do but sit and hope for the best.

Sorry to hear about your bad litters, as well. I hope the rest of your breeding season goes well.

Thanks again for the input.

I had a few babies with unabsorbed yolks too, I kept them moist and warm and 1 didnt make it. 1 did though I was really concerned about him too because he has some "special" traits. I was really worried about him and spoke with some people who had success with tying the cords with dental floss and then cutting it. I personally have never tried it so I can't really comment on it's effectiveness but I guess its another alternative. Thanks, Nick

I would've tried tying off the unabsorbed yolk, but these poor premies seemed to really go downhill pretty fast. Too bad, some had nice clean patterns to them. Anyway, thanks for the input.
