Protection of Inherently Dangerous Animals

April 8, 2005

Dear Senate Judiciary Member ,

I write to you with concerns of the implications of a comprehensive ban of

Inherently Dangerous Animals with much objectivity to any reptile listed . I have

read over the proposed bill and have found this to be an overly zealous proposal

under the guise of public safety to take the freedoms of hobbyist and business

owners alike . We in the reptile community are well aware of a freedom lost is a

freedom unlikely to be regained. We also know any proposal of this type passed

will lead to other infringements that serve special interest such as peta and the

human society agenda to abolish pet ownership . This legislation is no more

than a socialistic attempt to control the activities of the law abiding citizens of

North Carolina involved in your list of specified animals which you may change

or add to at your discernment .This bill which seeks to prohibit most mammals

and reptiles from every corner of the earth shows not of general public concern

and even less of actions of elected public servants of a democratic society

seeking the peoples will. This proposal encompasses as a whole reptiles of the

genus Boidae family which includes several commonly kept species including the

Boa Constrictor Imperator , Boa Constrictor Constrictor ,Boa Constrictor

Occidentalis as well as many other smaller Boas as well as smaller Python species that

there are no recorded record of causing death . I see this bill of course protects

the rights of the elite while trodding on the rights of the average man seeking

enjoyment of reptilian ownership be it as a hobbyist or small business owner

.These words may not carry much clout with you as I am not a citizen of your state,

however I feel the tourism industry of your state which I am certain generates large

revenues that directly benefit the coffers of your programs which paints a much

greater political agenda of the good works of each member of The General

Assembly of North Carolina would be quite displeased when countless ,might I

say again with emphasis ,countless amount of monies is lost by the reptile

community en masse as well as family and friends of each reptile owner banning

any vacations ,trips ,sporting events as well as sending any amount of money

through any sales regardless of nature to the state of North Carolina . If you

research you will find that our number is extremely large and growing daily and with it does

our steadfastness and commitment to protect our rights as well as our friends and

colleges be it in any state of this union . With each copy of this letter sent there

have been countless individuals joined in agreement that if this bill goes through

North Carolina is out and not just for a season ,we will not forget .We are law

abiding citizens who do not ask that those who go outside the law be not

punished who abuses their rights . We are professionals ,we are businessmen we

are lawyers ,doctors and nurses ,we are policemen, firemen and clergy and we

are indeed everywhere. We are as a society very responsible and take

responsibility of our actions. You each have the opportunity to be known and

appreciated as a friend to each of us with much to gain. As we reach our

collective hands out to you will you reach back ? Should the sandy beaches of

North Carolina be our vacation spot ? Should we ski your slopes or go to

NASCAR events ?Should we spend our collective dollars in North Carolina ?

Would you like your economy to grow further ? I leave these questions to each of

you . I ask that you be our friend and not our foe and see what a friend our society

can be to you .

Sincerely,

Darrin Brasher

Alabama

Feel free to copy and paste this letter please add your name and state . We need everyones involvement and please get your families and friends involved to stop this ban .

Good luck guys!! I hope you guys get this sorted. We had a similar thing happen to us where they wanted to ban lizards... and then they were gonna move onto all exotic snakes as well. Luckily we have some kick a$$ people here who gave them a peice of their minds. Luckily the government was at fault, and did it unconstitutionally, so we had a better hand at it!!

I really wish you guys the best of luck.

The U.S. is quickly becoming one of the less free countries on this planet. While other counties are working hard to gain rights we are giving them away.
I found this on a mammal forum and it is a little off topic but I think it says it all. We Americans must never forget we must fight to keep our rights...and fight HARD.
Here is the article...

A domestic cat is nothing more than a mutated African wildcat. Your pet poodle is nothing more than a mutated wolf. ALL "domestic" animals including cows, chickens, pigs, horses etc are just wild animals that have been selectively bred over many centuries to serve mans purposes. But serving mans purpose does not necessarily mean more friendly or less dangerous. When was the last time you heard of a wolf killing (or even biting) a human? But domesticated wolves (dogs) kill dozens of people a year and injure thousands. When was the last time you heard of a African wildcat injure someone? But domestic cats send many people to the hospital every year with bad bites and scratches. In fact, in the U.S. more people are killed every year by "domesticated" horses alone than all the wild animals combined. Yet every year we see more and more laws banning the ownership of wild animals to protect us from these dangerous animals. Many of these laws are based in fact but just as many are simply based on nothing more than ignorance and prejudice. And ignorance and prejudice walk hand in hand. If the law makers are really concerned about our safety then perhaps they should pass stronger laws on the keeping of dogs. I personally have been attacked and badly bitten by large dogs in public places on three different occasions. But the law makers seem to be more concerned with banning the keeping of small harmless pets. However, the trend by some states of banning the small feline hybrids such as Bengals, Chausies and Savannah's is by far and away the most rediculous and ignorant laws I have ever witnessed in my 43 years. These hybrids are no more dangerous than any domestic cat...remember a domestic cat is just a mutated African wildcat and has the same teeth, claws and the same ability to use them as any small wild species or hybrid. Unfortunately, there will always be those who wish to remain ignorant about things they don't understand forming a prejudice opinion based solely on this ignorance. And even more unfortunate it is often these same people who fight so hard to make THEIR prejudices the law and take away our right to pursue happiness. And therefore make the U.S. less free for all of us. Don't we already have enough laws regulating what we "free" Americans can and can not do? Thousands of Americans gave their lives in two world wars so you and I could hold on to our constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness...Why now are so many people trying to give these rights away??...Shame on them. I don't know about you but I want to live in a FREE America where I have the right to pursue happiness..This is what the U.S. is all about and the MOST important thing on this planet.

That's a VERY good letter Darrin. I hope a lot of people who keep reptiles and exotic mammals will make sure their voices are heard. I'm doing what I can too.

My chemistry teacher has set up a site which includes his letter to the senators, some further info on the ban, links to the bill itself, and the email addresses of the senators:
