Here is some more evidence for your orange tail = het anery thoery.

It looks darker now but as a neo that tail was just plain old orange. This is the sire to the litter I had yesterday.

Hmmmmm.....

Was his anterior portion unusually lacking in red as a neo, but filled in over time? I would love to see some pics of him as a kiddo!

Well i don't have any baby pics of him, My laptop died and I haven't tried to see if I can salvage the pics off of it :(

His tail wasn't a faded look like your example but more just straight orange. As he got older it became more of the brown/red that it looks now.
