View Full Version : Rosy boa shedding "?"
So I bought a rosy boa about a week ago and it has eaten it's first meal... Ya! Now it is going in to the first shed that I have had to deal with... I need to know if I would do anything special...?? I right now put the water bowl in the cage about two day's a week and the humitiy is about 30%.. Well I don't know if any of you would know about this but it is worth a try... He is a boa... one of just two that are found in U.S.A.

well You need to increase the humidity....atleast up to 50% and your snake should always have its water bowl....ecspecially now that its going into shed....

Hi Red,
I'm not an expert, but I do have several Rosy Boas. I got most of my info from www.rosyboa.com . I do a couple of things differently, like I keep water available to them at all times. I also give them a full month after the last feeding before I burmate them. The information is really very good on that web site and there's some breeders listed that are always glad to be helpful. I've purchased from Randy Wright, who's one of the breeders listed. If you want to get helpful info from him it's best to call. I think you have your snake set up very well, since Rosy Boas like low humidity. I've never had a rosy with a shed problem, so hopefully you won't either. If the humidity is too high it can lead to respratory problems. if you have a well ventilated cage with the proper temps your Rosy should do fine. I almost forgot. Rosy Boas are prone to strong feeding responses. Never feed your Rosy in it's cage. Use a seperate container. If you feed in the cage you might end up with a Rosy Boa that bites. Also it's always better to offer smaller food items. My Rosy's can easily eat large breeder mice or small rats, but I keep the food items small. The largest item I've ever given is a just weaned mouse or fuzzy rat. They seem to digest more easily and don't regurge.
Good Luck,
Linda

I joined this site a while ago, but haven't gotten around to posting till recently. I have a Rosy Boa myself, and even though I have heard they should only have water available a couple of days a week, I still have it available to him all the time. To help keep the humidity right, I simply use a small waterbowl. I only ever had a problem with him shedding once, but that was after a bout with mites (augh...he came with them). I have noticed that when he is due to shed, he will soak. As long as temps are right in the enclosure, you should have no problem. Good to see there are other Rosy fans out there! Mine is one of my favorites!!! :)
Ya I usta be real active on the message board at redtailboas.com but now I just am to busy to do anything.... I have been a member for as long as this place has been here... well almost... I have the cage at about 30% I can not get it lower but I think that he will be fine... the snake has a large bowl (well large for him) and I put fresh spring water in it 4 day's out of every week in two day period's at a time... but he seem's to like sitting in side his bowl when there is no water in it... (never seen him in it when there is water in it) I don't plan on cooling him at all but I don't cool any of my snake...(I don't breed) well I just coulden't handdle not beeing able to handle my snake for that long.
Thanx for the info and one "?" what type of ground material do you use...

Material? You mean substrate (bedding)? I use Calci-sand for him, and simple playground sand for my Kenyan Sand Boas. Either is good as long as you don't feed them on it. They might accidentally eat some with the mouse. I like the Calci-sand better because it's not as fine, but the playground sand I use is also sterilized, so who's to guess which is better?...lol
