a friend is offering a "rosy" boa that he is unable to take care of anymore. I have not seen anything one here about Rosy boas and was wondering if anyone knows anything about them.

Hi Scubadude,
Rosy boas are great! :'( I have 14 of them. I'm partial to the Mexican Rosy boa and both types of Albino Rosy Boa. They're easy to breed, if that's what you want to do. They're fairly easy to care for "if" you keep on top of things. They tend to have a "stong feeding reponse". That doesn't mean they're mean. It's means they like to eat. If you feed them in a "seperate container" and handle them regularly, giving them to digest first, they stay tame. Now "somtimes" Rosys will have a regurge problem. It doesn't happen all the time, but if it does you need to break regurging cycle as quickly as possible. It can be fatal "if" it continues for too long. Most times it won't happen at all if you give them smaller food items, give them time to digest before handling, and make sure you have proper temps. Rosy Boas like a "dry" climate. Too much humidity can cause problems too. A well ventilated cage will fix most himidity problems. Some people only water them once every couple of weeks. I like to keep a small water bowl in with mine at all times. I've been told they don't need access to water all the time, but I still like them to have fresh water available. Most Rosy boas don't get any longer than 3 feet. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule and some do get bigger. Most Rosy Boas can live their entire life in a 10 gallon aquarium, but a 20 gallong long is better. They can live a very long time. I have a female Rosy that's over 15 years old. The best thing to do is to get a book or check out www.rosyboa.com and www.rosyboas.com. Both web sites have lots of info. I really haven't found a good book on them yet, but I'm sure there's one out there. :'(
