1.Whats the difference between dominate and co-dominate 2.from what I understand when you breed a hypo to a normal about half the babies will be hypo know will the other half be het. for hypo

Steve,
I'll do my best to explain this. Yes, when you breed a hypo/orangetail/salmon to a "normal" you will get(theoretically) 50% hypos. The hypos produced from this litter would be considered co-dominant Hypos. If for example, you were to take two co-dominant hypos and breed them together, the resulting hypos from this breeding would be considered "Potential" dominant hypos. In order to prove whether or not these "Potential" hypos are dominant, you have to breed and prove them out. By this I mean if one of those "Potential" dominant hypos is bred to a "normal" and all(theoretically) the resulting offspring are hypos, then you know for sure that the "Potential" hypo is indeed a DOMINANT hypo! As for "Hets. for Hypo", there is no such thing when referring to the Hypos/OrangeTail/Salmons! Hope this helped, if not fire away! If I can't answer your question, I'm sure one of the Tank members can help you/me out! :)

I know that if you breed a hypo to a normal none of the normal looking babies will be hets, but if I understand Erichs post correctly when you breed a hypo to a hypo the normals might have a chance of being Het for hypo?
Just making sure I got that right the dominant and co-dominant traits really get me confused sometimes s3.gif

You almost have it...if you breed a hypo to a hypo you might get some dominant hypos...ie if its dominant then if you bred it to a normal then all the babies will come out hypo....understand?????
But there is not het for hypo...it is either hypo or its not....

Chris,
Sorry to confuse you! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HET. FOR HYPO/ORANGETAIL/SALMON!!!!!!!!! Any normals produced from a hypo x normal breeding or from hypo x hypo breeding are just that-Normal! :)

thanks for the info, now is there a difference betwen hypo/orangetail/salmon or are they just different names for the same morph

Steve,
IMHO, Orange Tails and Salmons ARE the same mutation. I know for a fact that they are compatible with one another. Rich Ihle currently has offspring for sale that came from a Salmon x Orange Tail(Dr. Hardy's Animals) breeding. Yes, both Orange Tails and Salmons ARE Hypos, but there are other "Hypos" out there. Sharon Moore's line of Hypos are the first example that comes to mind. These Boas are clearly Hypomelanistic, but they clearly are NOT an Orange Tail or Salmon! Basically, the term "Hypo" is a general term, while Orange Tails or Salmons are a more specific example of Hypos. I hope I helped more than confused, but if not PLEASE speak up and I will do my best to clarify this for you! ;)

Erich,
I believe there is a new "strain" of hypo boas out there that some one is currantly working with, but I am not sure who. Anyway, these "new hypos" are said to simple recessive. ??? I was made aware of this by Jim Hopkins (aka: "hoppy"). I will try to get in touch with him to find out more.
Steve,
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion ;D

Hi Allan,
I believe the "New" Hypo you are referring to was produced by Sharon Moore. I was fortunate enough to get a male from her last year and he is AWSOME! Here's a pic of my little dude! ;)
