View Full Version : Sad Day

This morning we woke up to find Buddy, our baby Ball Python had passed away. We did all we could to nurse him back to health but in the end, he just wasn't strong enough to fight off his upper respiratory condition. Ryan, who is all of 5 years old now was not around when we made the discovery. We told him God came down and took Buddy to heaven last night but it was still sad. Luckily Bobo, Ryan's RTB is doing fine and that helps him deal with the loss of the Ball. I will probably not buy a Ball again. Instead I will stick with BCC's and BCI's. It is only the second time I've lost a snake in some 32 years of owning them but it still hurts.

:( Talk about sad days! It was awful to find that young Ball Python dead. Later on that day, I went into Ryan's room. He has had this crayfish for almost 3 years. It grew to the size of a little lobtser. He was huge and blue. I found him lying on his back the same day I found the Ball dead. It really was a sad day for a little 5 year old. He cannot figure out, in his own little mind, why God took two of our pets on the same day.

Bob,

Sorry for your loss. The passing of any pet is always tough on kids (and me too). Kids usually bounce back pretty quick though.

Maybe you should get a mate for your RTB. Sorry to hear you won't get a Ball again. My Ball, Arakis, is about as sweet as any snake I have ever encountered (snakes can be sweet, can't they?) We also have a red albino corn and this Tuesday I'll be receiving one of Jeff's RTB that I purchased from Clay English.

I started my step kids on tyhe hobby with Arakis and now we just seem to keep adding to our collection. If only I could get my wife involved, then watch our collection grow!

Sorry about your loss. At least this gives kids a little understanding of life and death and teaches them not everything lives forever. :(

I only bought the Ball because my daughter wanted a different snake. Since Ryan had a RTB, we thought the Ball would be perfect. We never enjoyed the Ball like we enjoy the RTB. It is tough for a 5 y/o to really understand the loss. Losing the Ball wasn't so bad for him. It was the loss of the crayfish that really upset him. It was his very first pet and it stung when he realized it was no longer prowl the fish tank. The Ball belonged to his sister and she really nevr got close to it. We are planning to buy some Bearded Dragons at the next Reptile Show in November. For now we will be a one RTB family but that could change in a minute.

:'(  I know exactly what you mean.  This weekend, one of our birds passed away at 8 years old.  My 2 young step kids were very upset.

They cheered up a bit when the UPS man came yesterday and delivered our new baby boa from Clay English.  Talk about a beauty!  :D  As I write this, she is eating a nice size thawed rat pinky.  She is the first snake I have ever owned that has been eating frozen since birth...what a pleasure.

oops, sorry...I strayed off topic.

As many of us have learned...time truly does heal wounds (and a few more snakes doesn't hurt either  ;)  )

It is really nice to see the type of comfort people offered regarding the passing of the animals in our home. It was truly sad when the Ball named Buddy died but the crayfish, who had no name, was living with us for 2 and a half years and was huge by crayfish standards. All we have left now is Bobo and have decided to put on hold any further additions to the pet family here. We were considering Beardies but will wait until 2003.

Bobo has become a recluse since we gave her a Bounty Towel empty tube. She spends all her days in there and comes out only at night now. Unfortunately she is going to outgrow the tube soon and we will have to find something similar for her to hang out in. She likes tubes more than anything else so if anybody has any suggestions on what to replace the paper towel tube with, please let me know. Once again, thank you for all your replies and well wishes.

suggestion: Wait until Christmas....They usually have those really HUGE Christmas wrapping paper rolls...I know that those are like 2-3 inches in diameter. Or try a hobby shop or arts and crafts stores....Worse case scenario...make your own...thin sheet of cardboard, roll it up, and use something non-toxic, or whatever to keep it together...

my 2 cents, good luck with the beardies...my wife is begging me to get her one.
