They're Boa Constrictors.
So, at what length do they become dangerous? And can you put them on your neck?

i wouldnt suggest putting it around your neck after 5 or six feet or so, but nobody to my knowledge has been killed by a boa. if you handle them alot when they are young, and countinue to handle them a lot when they are older, then they will stay mellow and family freindly. lol so, they dont really become dangerous. my boa is the friendliest snake i've ever handled.

and all that constrictors refers to is the method by which it kills its prey.

Ive heard of so many people getting killed by snakes, Strangled.
Ive held 9ft boas and i would consider any boa over 5ft a hazard to have around your neck when your alone, Just keep your hands on the out side so the snake cant curl around..

I've herd of little tricks you can do if a snake is trying to constrict you( bending back the end of the tail, pouring hot water on them, ect.) does anybody know if any those actually work? and if so which ones?

never heard of the "bending tail" thing, Works on my cat! lol
I have heard of pouring WARM water on them. Never hot though.. heard it works well.

I don't know if my water would get warm fast enough if I was being strangled. You could have warm water ready but that isn't a great idea. You should always have someone who is not afraid of snakes with you if you are concerned! :'(

I thought I had heard that about anacondas and I know I have seen footage of a water bison calf being removed from the belly of one! :'(
HI,
I ve heard of this never tried it if your being choked or having a problem ( you should never work with a large reptile alone)
you can step into a shower turn on the cold water, most snakes will drop off instantly ... This isn't reccomended for general snake health but if its choking the poo out of you and your in trouble the cold water will shock them :-/ :-/...
doug :(
the more common reptile problems occur with free roaming larger pythons and such... Never allow them access to your living space that would be real dumb..no matter how sweet you think that burm is ???.....

haha, imagine letting your 16 foot burm to roam your house and then you just free a rabit/sheep in your house, the neighbors would find the house down the street abit strange :'(
HI,
I know it sounds stupid but a lot of python keepers do allow their snakes out in the house loose or free roaming.
Geeze thats bad, we had one escape out of a second story window pushed the screen out and it was free here in VA,, it was loose in a (snake room) without a cage..They found it just before the weather turned cold...It was living in a storm drain...

Never fails. It's a heck of a lot quicker and easier than trying to find a hot water source before you are strangled.

Something like that. Just reach in and pull where it is tightest. If that does not work then I guess you can "pull their tail."

If I'm not mistaken, the tail is from the vent back.

I think if you are getting bit or choked and in danger, just reach inside their mouth and all the way down as far as you can and pull them inside out and they will just go in the opposite direction. It never fails.

LOL..The tail is only what is back of the cloaca or vent...in that assumtion, you are correct. Pulling out on the tail and unwinding a snake who has bitten and coiled in a feeding response is the easiest way to get a SMALL to Moderate sized snake off you. The larger ones can be quite overpowering and will need at least one second person THAT KNOWS what they are doing!!!! SOmeone standing there screaming and watching in horror is no help...It only takes seconds for them to put your lights out if they get a good wrap on you. I know this may sound harsh, but it isn't really that much of an issue as I don't handle anything over 9 feet here when I'm alone...and ventures into the burm cage when I'm home alone are very rare...but if for some reason I do have to do something in that cage, I keep a large knife in my back pocket in case I have to cut myself free as a my own life saving last resort. Old Max is pretty docile though cept on feeding day.

I suggest the person who started this thread do aloooot of reading up on boas and snakes in general before even considering getting back into herps.
Any snake can be dangerous at almost any length.
It is not a good idea or safe to put just about any snake around your neck, especially a constrictor and especially if you don't know what you're doing.
They tighten around your neck because that's their only support - it's like their tree or tree branch.. They will plant themselves there as firm as possible so to avoid possibly falling and being injured.
If you dangle him or move or try to push or move him off, that's like you hanging off a cliff on a tree, and someone is moving the tree and trying to push your hands and arms over..
YOU WILL GRAB ON AS TIGHT AS POSSIBLE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES!
If you do have a snake wrapped around you, you would need someone, or you, to pull from the tail AND the head, prefferebly simultaneously - these would be the easiest for you to pull, would manuver him the best, making it easiest to release the grip or remove him from you.
If you reach for the tightest spot or the thickest or middle area, they will just squeeze tighter and really put you into a dangerous predicament.
I suggest doing some more research before purchasing a boa. I would also suggest starting out with a baby Central American boa.
Thanks - take care - Joe

i have always kept this thread on my favorites. i just reread it again and laughed as hard as i did the first time. this still has made me laugh harder then anything else ever.
I just give 'em a little pinch, and say "Stop it!"
Sillyness aside, there is a trick that I'm going to reveal here for all of you fine folks..
A trick, if done properly, will make your chances of trouble dwindle into nothingness.
It's an old trick, passed down through generations of Boaphiles, originally discovered by ancient Shamans of the Columbian jungle..
Don't put 'em around your neck..;D

another prob with allowing a snake to wrap around your neck is that their movement against the veins in your neck can interfere with capalaries ability to store oxygen and prevent enough o2 from getting to your brain.
