is this an acceptable substrate material for a red tail?
Yes it is... I have herd of serveral people that use it... Normaly barks are not good but coconut bark is actuly coconut shell so it is fine...

I use orchid bark that is sterile my boas love it, thay dident seem as keen on the coconut bark, just make sure you dont feed them on it.

Well, I've used it before. Great stuff for keeping the humidity up, and it's more natural...like climbing around on the forest floor. The only problem I have with it is that it tends to mold up (fine what powdery looking stuff usually) after 2 or 3 weeks. It may also be hard to spot a snake turd in it. It also has to be kept wet. If it dries out, the fine powder can get in their noses and clog things. (snake boogers usually chuckle)
