Today I took delivery of a precious commodity!

That's right... Aspen shavings! I have tried Aspen in all my baby cages and in about 20 - 2' x 2' cages and my Boas seem to be loving it! I love it too! This weekend my good long time old buddy Vence is coming over to help me make the big huge monstrous switcheroo. As you might expect, this is a little bit of a job. I had 60 - 30 lb. bags of this bedding delivered. I have been using the exact same substraight for all the years I have been keeping Boas. These 17 years have seen a couple of semi loads of newspaper, all laid flat, come and then go soiled with a mixture of urates, Boa POOP, and baby slime. I must say I am very happy to see it all go. While the Aspen cost more for the product itself, we no longer will spend countless hours unfolding newspaper. No more ink stains. No more paper cuts. No more stained Albinos from the black ink.

In addition I have been using plain dry clay kitty litter without any perfumes or scents of any kind under the newspaper. This was to make sure my lovely bride of more than 22 blissful years, love of my life who worships the ground I walk on, now did not have to smell the vapors from fresh hot steamy rat hair infested need I say usually brown Boa POOP. Of course we only had a few Boas when I started and we have a few more now and she does wash the hundreds or water bowls but she has never ever had one whiff of steamy stinky Boa POOP. Not once. Yea right. The kitty litter does help keep the smell down but is the cause of many very snotty sneezes after a long day of Boa Poop shoveling and urate scraping.

We will be using a shop vac to clean out all the yucky kitty litter, urate scraps and misc POOP chunks and will also be using that same shop vac, dubbed the "Crap Vac" by Mark Kennedy, as the valuable stinky POOPER scooper in the future. We will be picking up the big chunks and vacuum the rest. I can't wait to start cleaning this stuff! I am building a special canister for the vacuum so I can put a plastic bag in it to haul out the POOP as it were. I can't wait!!!!

I'll keep yawl posted! I wonder if this means I won't have that Boa POOP under my finger nails any more. I used to kind of enjoy cleaning that stuff out when I was done cleaning cages. What else are your canines good for right!?!?

I've tried it all...newspaper, aspen, kitty litter, care fresh etc. etc. Now I just use big beach towels. When they get soiled I just pull them out, wipe down the cage, put another towel in the cage and throw the soiled towels in the washing machine...works like a charm and takes hours off of cleaning time. I just keep two towels for every cage so when one gets soiled it's easy to replace.

I mostly use newspaper....
I do use the "crap vac"

but for princess...my big albino burm... I use blankets....
I find it easier .....because I do not have to deal with lots of newspaper or substrate. I just vacuum up the poo poo and pee pee and put the blanky in the washing machine...

perhaps when I have like a gazillion snakes...then I would make the switch.....

aspen all the way for me... I have tryed to use just new's paper, astro turff, blankets, towls, and alfalfa pellets.. the best is aspen... I put new's paper under it so the boa's can not burrow to the uth it also makes it handy to clean.. all you have to do is just roll it up like a big sigar and through it away...

now that this post is old i doubt anyone will read this, but i also use towels, but have found that marine turf works well too...easy to cut exactly to the size of the cage, water proof, pull it out, take it outside spray it down with the hose and done. I usually get enough to have some on reserve so when one gets spoiled I can put a clean one in and let the other dry out. I've been fortunate enough that my boa hasn't pooped in her cage in over 2 years. I try my best to notice any growth towards that tail of hers and put her outside when I think it's gotten a little bit close and sure enough, no cleaning, no wiping of tanks or nothing, just fertilizer for the yard, or something for the dogs to sniff at. cwm32.gif
