What's your favorite cage cleaner? I use Quat Plus from Big Apple Herp. I also treat the cages once a month with Provent-a-Mite as a precautionary measure.
Chad
almost the same, cept i treat my bins of aspen with provent a mite.
i treat the bins in another room because the fumes are strong!
I use a 8% bleach soultion for my cages... It works like a charm... I also treat my cages with provent-a-mite one a month....

:-/ Hello, I was just wondering if any of you have used or know if the cleaning liquid Virosan, offered by Pro Exotics, is worth buying or using? It is also supposedly used by vets and very effective at cleaning and killing bacteria etc. Any comments on how well it works, and/or where to buy it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance everyone,

;) Thanks for the advice, i'll probably be getting in touch with them later this week to see what they have to say about it. Just trying to find out if I can get it locally from a Vets office so i won't have to pay double what it costs to get it shipped to me. Shipping is not fun to pay for. ???
Thanks again for the advice and reply,
gofer

I use a 5% bleach solution. Fun Fun Fun. I know, I'm not helping much, but that's what I use because I am cheap.

Not really, I think it smells clean. Although I think I'm allergic to something in it because when I spray it on whatever I'm cleaning I can feel my throat swell and I start to cough bad. I always rinse well and dry before I put anything in whatever I'm cleaning.

;D Hello everyone, I found a 4 oz bottle of Nolvasan, which makes 8 gallons of cleaning solution. It is like Virosan, I picked it up at a vet supply office. I bought it for very cheap, compared to other cleaning solutions I've seen advertised. I talked to the some people at the office and they use it to clean cages, animal tables, etc. They love it and said it has a little bit of an odor, so either let the cages air out or wipe over them again real quick with a little clean water on a rag. I just bought, but after I use it a few times I'll try to let everyone know how it works. ;)
Have a good one,

I know that the one's that make bad fumes are not good for anything's lung's and if you have a fish tank in with your boas or other boas you need to take them out of the room... It could kill them... Remember us humans have a liver that is highly active all of the time... Most other animals don't..(have a liver that is as active in getting out chimicals) It could kill them real easy... Just thought I would through that out for all the newbi's...

Hello, thanks for the advice on the fumes. They said they used it on all their animal cages, but it will be different because snake and lizard cages are all closed in for the most part. I plan on wiping them down with some clean water and letting them air out for a while before placing any animals back in the tanks.
I have heard about not using fish tanks for reptiles, and I'm thinking that when I was really young I used to use them for both, and had no deaths from it. Didn't have enough money being that young to buy seperate tanks for everybody (I like exotic fish too), plus no one told me about it being harmfull until a few years ago. But I'm not sure if I used my old fish tanks or not...can't remember that far back... to the good old days. Thanks for the advice,
Gofer ;)

Here's my two cents:
I work in a research lab that has huge colonies of both mice and rats. We use 10% bleach for all the fume hoods, instruments, and other items outside of the rodent cages/racks. For cleaning the boxes/bottles/toys (yes we give the rats "toys" we use Virosan.
So, when I started working here, I immediately did research on it to see if it would work for my reptiles. Sure enough it does. I have used it for quite a while now and love it!!! It is even sometimes used as an antiseptic mouthwash and wound wash!! Not only is it a very effective antimicrobial, but its very safe as well.
So I followed suit with my work and use a 5% bleach solution to clean water dishes and hide spots (with a long rinse afterward) and use the virosan for the cleaning of the cage itself.

My Favorite cleaner is tap water, and clean paper towels.
I use newspaper on the floor of the cage then roll them up if dirty wiped down the cage with a wet paper towel couple times
change the newspaper and it ready to go.
If you remove all the soiled material there isn't any problem nor odor.
I don't like cleaning material in my cages.
the only time I would sterilize a cage with 10 % bleach is if someone had an open sore or infection that could be contagious.
>:(Another news flash most newspaper has natural antibiotic properties proably due to the ink in the paper..
thats why some vets reccomend black inked newpaper for belly rot and it easy to spot clean by removal.

every cleaning solution has been proven to cause cancer in laboratory animals sooner or later, remember lysol active ( phenol based cleaner)..
Bleach can give off a gas if not allowed to dry this can fry your reptiles lung's
be real sure you remove all your cleaner before replacing any animal in the cage, take a snif if you smell bleach it aint safe.

Thanks for the information guys, greatly appreciated. I use a very watered down concentrate to clean my cages, and usually only use it when feces have gone under or through the newspaper. I have never heard of newspaper actually having a plus besides being clean and easily replaced.
Have a good day, and thanks again.
