I just noticed that my baby boa has a small lump on the underside of its body. It doesn't feel hard to the touch. I did not notice this lump yesterday, and I noticed it immediately after feeding her today. Here's a pic of it. I washed the area with a 50/50 peroxide water solution and rubbed some neo sporin under the skales.

I thought it might be scale rot from reading about it, but after seeing photos of it, I no longer think this is the case. The bump is not discolored and it feels like its under the skin, pushing the skin out. I have been keeping the cage pretty moist lately because my other boa is getting ready to shed. I just cleaned/disinfected and cleaned the cage today. I am going to keep the substrate dry for now.

I guess I'm going to wait this out for a few days before calling a vet. Anyone have any ideas. Here is a pic.

I read that there can be worms under the skin? This is a captive bred animal purchased from a pet store. Thanks

are you sure it isnt the prey item you fed her? You really shouldnt handle any snake for at least 48 hours after feeding. -sTEVE

Its pretty hard to tell with that pic..It could be the forming of a cyst. Or like spook said it could be the prey item. Give it a day or two then call a vet.

I don't think its the prey item because its too high up on the neck of the snake. The mouse is way further down the body in the stomach. A cyst can go away on its own if the snake is in good health right? What would cause a cyst to form?

I have had a cyst in my jaw once and it had to be taken out...
The doc said that they just happen... I was a lil' kid and don't remeber all the details but I don't think they go away on ther own..../

Im a medic in the Navy. A cyst will not go away and over time it
will get bigger. There is nothing that causes them they just happen. Your better off to take care of it sooner rather then later because the bigger it gets the bigger the scar for your snake. What they'll do is lance it and take all the pus and nodules out and sowe it back up. Your vet can do a needle assparet test on it and tell you if its a cyst. Cyst are not fatal or life threatning. Take him or her to the vet and have it tested.

Good Luck

Well I have good news. The bump is gone. I am so releived.

Maybe it was due to keeping the cage so moist the past couple of days. Anyway, as I stated before I had immediately cleaned, disinfected and refilled the cage with new dry substrate after finding the bump. I also upped the cage temp to 98 on the hot spot and 87 ambient. I had also rubbed neosporin into the layers between the scales twice yesterday. I don't know what helped it go away, I'm just happy its gone. Probably just a coincidence.
