I am soooo excited about Momma Brooke!! This is her first litter! Shes 4.5 years old and six feet 20 pounds. From the first litter of boas I ever produced! She is a favorite pet of mine. I cant SLEEP waiting for her first litter! Whats amazing about the boas from this line is that they stay very high yellow! This is her in a dark phase being gravid. The litter with be het albino. I'll post a pic of her before she was gravid so you can see how YELLOW she is. I'm kinda calling them Jadeline pastels. All the babies hold this yellow!! Anyway...... only a couple more days!!!!!!!!!

Day 113 and NO babies! This is a not very good picture I took of her at about 10:00 P.M, just two hours ago. I decided to try something I've never done before! I put two large tubs in her cage, one on the heat and one on the cool side. She scooted into one after only a couple minutes! Maybe this will help her feel like shes got a special place to have them? This is the same idea Rich Isle uses with his stuff, Im just goofing off. Anyway, I this is Brook, bedtime for me. :'(

This is a very anxious time. I hoep it pays off. I had one girl go over date, but I am still waiting for her to drop babies... think t was a phantom pregnancy. My first and hopefully last experience with it.

I know what it feels like to expect babies any time. Restless sleep, waking up 2 times a night to check for babies. Oh well, good luck, hope they don't keep you waiting too long.

Ha thats funny. I did the same thing a couple days ago. Mine is at 108 days pos. she looks in the tub but won't climb in.

That's a nice looking momma!

If she were to have the babies in the tub, is there a possibility that she could crush some of the babies?

She is a beauty! Best of luck! :'(

I feel for you! We have one that will be 123 days post ovulation on Tuesday. She did not have a post ovulation shed. She just dropped her waxy poo yesterday, so we are on pins and needles around here as well.

Keep us posted.... :P

Dr._Klopson
04-15-2005, 12:54 PM
123 DAYS!!! Wow! I guess I could have quite a bit more waiting ahead if she wants! And I hope she dosent squish any babies in the tub. The two people I know that do this both have experienced that the animals dont stay in the tubs but feel that it is a safe place to have babies. They seem to end up only having the tail end in the tub when giving birth. I am a little worried though! I've second guessed myself a dozen times and may still pull the tubs out. I dont know?? :'(

118 days POS and counting! I give up. This is my first year breeding my boas in a new boa room. I have NEVER had a female go this long!! I have four gravid females this year, I'm wondering if something about this new change in climate will make ALL of them go longer??? They are on the same property but facing North and getting a little less dirrect sun. I'm getting a bit worried now though! I HOPE she has a safe birthing experience........ I shot these pics tonight! Come on Brook!!!

Good Luck Dr. K. Have you tried misting her?? I think Boas live to make us stress, and hold our breath, and thumbs, and everything else!! i hope she produces some nice babies for you!!

My ex husband bought a boa, about a year ago. He kept her for 4 months, and then decided to sell her cause she stopped eating. It looked like she was permanently ovulating.

I sold her to a friend of mine, and none of his males were interested in breeding with her. In December she had 8 live babies, although only 5 survived, and about 30 slugs. I believe she was gravid when my ex got her. It's all speculation, but she carried for well over 6 months.

Dr._Klopson
04-19-2005, 03:17 PM
Thanks for the experience! The animals can do what they want sometimes! The more time that goes by the more I worry shes not going to have a healthy litter!!! Crap!!! I have been misting her like crazy, I've been debating taking her out VERY GENTLY and letting her get a little exercise..... I just a little afraid of hurting her!!! What to do, What to do.......

Hey guys! Thanks for the concern! She STILL hasent had them yet!! On the 27th she will be 125 days P.O.S. I have never had a female go this long ever! I am soooo sick about it, I really hope she pulls threw ok........ and the litter to. I've done things to encourage birth I thought I'd never do! I've taken her out VERY CAREFULLY and let her slither around the living room twice the last week, and I've let her soak for an hour in 82 degree water! She looks perfectly healthy and is acting completly normal for a gravid momma about to go. I'm not even excited about the litter anymore, just her health. I hope it goes well, shes my favorite high yellow female from my first litter years ago!! If she hits day 128 she goes to my vet for a peak at those babies..................... :'(

04-27-2005, 12:32 PM
I am sorry but I have an advice for you ,since you must have been eating all your nails , becarefull with your fingers  ;D
To be be serious if you are going to the vet ask him about using ocytocine to get the contractions .
There is a big risk for the female and the babies if they are to late. They can come outside the "egg " in the female so they will die and the female to, of "septicemie". I have had that case long time ago !
Cross my finger for you !
May be you are wrong about the pos ?

Bushbaby
04-28-2005, 02:03 AM
I would never recommend oxytosin (Sp?) Take her to the vet, get a scan / sonar. Then you guys decide what to do. Possibly then oxytocin can be administered under vet supervision.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Dr. Klopson,

Did she have an intermediate shed? if so what date? I am wondering if it is possible that she was not actually gravid when you thought and that she may have ovulated subsequent to your original believed date. Is that a possibility? If so, counting from the date of the "intermediate" shed date may give you the actual due date. I have talked with many people who have had that happen. Many times. It has happened to me too.

Here is what happens sometimes. The female becomes enormous. So much so that it sure looks like an ovulation. Then she goes into a shed. Yup. That must have been the "Post Ovulation Shed". Then over the next period of time, you don't look at her nearly as closely as you did before you saw ovulation because you know that you have four months to wait and nothing of any consequence is going to happen anyhow. So she actually does have an ovulation but you don't see it. Because your busy or just not looking that closely or out of town or whatever. Then she goes into a shed again and has what appears to be an intermediate shed. Intermediate sheds are of course of no consequence. Waiting and waiting those babies don't come when they should and ultimately come far later. This I believe to be one of the reasons that some have written that the Boa Constrictor gestation period can be even 6-8 months.

Now time will tell what will happen with this animal. I have no idea what is going on or if she is really in any sort of trouble or not. But just thought I mention this as a possibility. Let us know what you figure out.

By the way. Vets are notorious for not observing anything inside the female via just an x-ray. An ultrasound is what she will really need.

Good luck young man!

Jeff

Hey Jeff! Thanks for your words of boa wisdom and time, I know your busy! Its 2:00 am and I'm up checking on Brooke to see if any babies or problems. This is what my records show Jeff: Oct. 26 at 1:00pm first swelling noted (pre ov. swell perhaps) this after a few days subsides. Then Dec. 13 she REALLY swells up the second time ( the presumed ovulation ) at 2:45 pm. Dec. 15 she is milky eyed and opaque starting the post ov. shed ..... or so I think. Male looses all interrest but is let in cage just in case. Dec. 24. post ov. shed is complete. Due date on April 7th I think it was.... I have no record of an interm. shed cycle..... I'm so careful to write everything down I see with gravid females, its possible I missed it but I sure doubt it Jeff..........but I wouldnt bet my life on it. She has progressively gotten larger and larger to the point she looks like she just FULL of babies now! She acting fine! She has an appointment with Dr. A. snake lover vet. in the morning on Friday ...... thats in about 5 or 6 hours for a sonogram. I hope this post is understandable Im tired! I'll talk to you all soon and thanks for caring. Daniel Klopson :'(

Hello all!!! News from the Vets visit on Friday. I am lucky to live around the corner from a GREAT snake loving vet with a brand new state-of-the-art sonogram machine!! WOW WOW WOW. I couldnt believe the pictures he got. We saw perfect babies, perfect little skeletons, all still in perfect little sacks, with perfect little strong heart beats!!!!! I saw the hearts beating in front of my eyes with clarity I never knew was possible. I also heard the heart beats! The pics were SO good he was able to measure one of the babies from snout to tail..... 19 inches! We also were able to see that the sacs were still thick enough to keep the snake from just falling out in the womb. I'll tell you this ... the machine at the hospital they used on my WIFE and our unborn baby girl was NOTHING compared to this machine. So I must have missed a second ovulation??? I dont know, I have so much to learn. If you live in Nor. Cal. I have the Vet for you!!!!!!!!!!! It was a moving experince for me :'( I have new faith in Brooks litter!

Definitly possible.. The first ovulation could have been big enough to trigger her to shed, and then she could have had another during or after the shed.

SHE HAD BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CALL THE FRONT PAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She had her babies on 6/3/05! Sorry I took so long to tell you its been a little busy! I really misjudged this gestation period but I learned ALOT from my records! #1 and most important from the date I removed the male........ if she had a 105 day gestation.... that means she retained healthy sperm for 4 weeks plus before her true ovulation(s) tool place! I've read different opinions on sperm retention but this is first hand! Unless that is she had a 165 day gestation which I doubt! #2: You wont believe this litter!!!! I bred my nicest Jadeline female ( very high yellow and clean) to a nice double het for striped albino male........... I got a finale count of 20 babies and 5 slugs, no still born........ this in the crazy part, she threw 2 arabesque boas, and 2 new somethings I've never seen! These are boas with a supper light tan back with dark grey sides! Maybe nothing at all but............. who knows!!! A couple pics of the litter and more to come! Thanks for your interrest and support!

She had the babies at 10:15 am. The night before I thought she was having contractions, she was also very mobile. After having them all which took three hours, she would plow threw them over and over! The first time I opened the cage she lunged out and tried to kill me! I let the babies alone for several hours with her and everytime I came in the room she'd start pushing them all over the cage again and again! This mommy behavior is so cool to see. Anyway thats it! sorry for te wait! Dan

Dan,
I'd definitly hold on to the arab looking ones..  They are different than an arabesque though, not in a bad way but a good way.  Look at how straight the line is along the connecting pattern.  An arabesque is not so defined and straight.  Your "bleached back" and arab looking ones have a similar wash too except the arab looking ones wash is all over while the bleached back ones have the wash missing from the back.  Just a few things to think about.. :'(

Oh.. I was talking about the actual sqaretail morph not a circleback laddertail..
