Hi everyone, I'm new here so this is my first post.

Recently we have decided we want a Boa Constrictor. We decided on them because from what I've heard and experienced (the ones I've handled) they have good temperaments, they're beautiful, they don't get extremely huge, yet they aren't small either. We've owned a ball python before and had him for a long long time but tragically, we had someone stay at the house one night to watch the dogs (we were out of town) and they took the snake out to hold it and then failed to snap the top on correctly, and later on the snake got out and ended up going down the toilet and drowing in the pipes. It was horrible, we loved the snake to death.

Anyways, we have a 20 gallon tank ready for a new baby snake, and advice would be appreciated. There are no small children in our household, only a German Shepherd and a cat (we will have super strong locks on the top of the cage and will have the cat in another room while the snake is out).

Also, I recently found out there are snakes out there that need adoption. And thoughts on this? I like the idea of adoption.

Again, any advice is helpful. Thanks!

First of all, Welcome! I dont have to much to input but the only thing I will say is.... The 20 gallon will work for a bit but after time passes I would invest in something more economical i.e. A plastic tub, vision cage, boaphile cage, or even something custom made. It just makes cleaning and upkeep on your snakes much easier!

Welcome to the forum! A 20 gal. tank will work for awhile for you but your boa is going to need a larger enclosure fairly soon. I am a BIG fan of Boaphile Plastics caging, which has worked extremely well for me. Maintaining proper heat and humidity level in a glass enclosure requires a bit more effort than with other options.

Adopting a boa is a tremendous idea. You should have little trouble finding one.

Howdy,
Nice to hear you got a boa, they're cool pets. If you want so free nice info i'd go to http://www.redtailboas.com/general_care/general_care.html. Clay English, put it together, and he also drops in a message around here, once in a while. Check it out, it's nice. Oh yeah when you do get a bigger inclosure, make sure you don't get another, glass tank. They can break really easy, and it's not fun reaching in through the top, if your snake gets grumpy. I have a vision cage now, and it works like a charm! I hear the boaphile's cages are nice too. Good Luck.
