I have two adults that are 5 years old ... I recieved them as adults .. Their tails are totally black and you cannot see any red in them. I was wondering if the red pigment could get so dark that it would not be seen. I have seen adults with red tails still... this make me wonder if they are anery.

Does any one have information on anery types in boas?

Jeff? Anyone?

Thanks,
rottie

Hey Rottie,
I have one of those "Black Tail Anerythristics". I like to call her a "normal". ;D I'm not saying that she's a normal. I'm saying I haven't proven her to be anerythristic. I think the only way to be 100% sure if the ones with the black tails are anery is to breed them to a boa you know for "fact" to be anery. If all the babies are Anerythristic you know you have a Anerythristic. If you get a combination of normal and Anerythristic you would have to figure it's a het for Anery. If you get all normal you have to figure you have a normal boa with a black tail. Now when you said, "you cannot see any red in them" I'm thinking you were talking about the "whole" snake and not just the tail. Anerythristic boas have no red at all. I've posted a picture of the male I'm going to use to prove out the genetics of my female. The picture was taken when he was a baby. He's bigger now. LOL.
Hope this helps,
Linda :D

She looks good! I don't see any red either. I still don't know if she's anery though. Do you have a breeding pair of them? You know male/female? If so I would breed them together and see what you get. Breeding is really the only way to know for sure, I think. I do know its the only way to prove genetics. If all the babies lack red then you have anerys. It's just to hard to tell on the black tail ones without background info or breeding them. Were these boas captive bred? If so, you could ask the person you got them from for some background and maybe even get pics your snakes parents. If you do breed them I hope you post pics of the babies. :D

The Socratic Method indicates this statement has a 99.4% chance of being right on the money. And besides all that, I wholeheartedly agree. Jeff is DEFINITELY more wacky than most people I've met. I think it has to do with excessive cranium volume, or something like that, like, you know?
