View Full Version : want to start breeding
i purchaced a 66% poss het albino female (with a small stripe)at a recent show and i was thinking of breeding. im trying to figure this out as best as i can. i need a male 100% het to see if this female is het. if she is then the liter would be: 25% normal, 50% het, 25% albino. since i wouldnt know the normals between the hets i would sell them as 66% poss hets. if im wrong please explain. im sure this has been answered before but i couldnt find it anywhere. Thank you for your help.

Yup thats what you'd get if she proves, if she didn't the babys would be 50% poss het albinos.
do both hets need to come from the same srain because i was reading that if the orig. albinos and the sharp albinos are bred together they wouldnt produce an albino.

That is what is believed to be true - I say believed because form what I understand it has yet to be proven. thanks

I thought someone had tried the breeding of the 2 strains...
If not that would be an interesting project, even though it could cause a lot of headaches trying to figure out what you got from a dh sharp/kahl to dh sharp kahl, etc..
Later Randy T.
so then the answer is no, both animals dont need to come from the same strain? if the snake i have is het and i buy another 100% het it will produce albino. sorry if im repeating myself i just want to be certain.

I believe that it has been tried. I remember reading on one of the big guys web sites that they tried it and got all normal babies. I'll have to go back and see if I can find it again. If I do I'll post the address.

MAKO - it seems we have you thinking a little off track here.... technically we are not 100% certain - what we discussed was merely speculation!
What we are sure of, and i'm sure everyone will agree, is that if you deffinately want to produce Albino's in the first breeding, the pair MUST be het for the SAME STRAIN of Albinism.
So YES you must breed Khal het to Khal het, and you will produce albino's - which are Khal strain of course.
We were being a bit creative, regarding our previous statements - to clarify, a Khal het bred to a Sharp het WILL NOT produce albinos in the first litter ! In fact, those 2 hets bred together will produce 50% possible DH's for Sharp and Khal strain albino's.
Is that better?

Right Kathy, it wouldn't have produced Albinos.
If it were het X het, they would all be normal appearing 50% possible hets for both Kahl and Sharp strain albino.
If it were Kahl Albino X Sharp Albino, the would've been 100% DH for both strains, and again normal appearing.
When bred back together, they should show characteristics of both Strains, somehow, and what that would look like, we have no idea.
Technically, the genes work out... so it CAN be done... that's why we were talking about that really..
Hope that all helps!
thank you for your help, that cleared it up!

If it were het X het, they would all be normal appearing 50% possible hets for both Kahl and Sharp strain albino.
Correction of you breed a het kahl X het sharp you are dealing with 2 different recessive genes. Therefore the odds would be 1 normal, 1 het kahl, 1 het sharp and 1 dbl het. Hope this clears things up. Drew
