View Full Version : Question about an alibino boa

I recently purchased a columbian red tailed that was sold as 66% het albino. I was just wondering exactly what this meant. The man I bought her from said that a male of the same percentage would give us a good chance at having albino babies. She's just a baby right now and it will be at least three years before she'll be ready. I also wanted to know if it mattered which snake was male and female as in breeding a male pastel and a female albino (just an example I have no idea what i'm talking about) . Would you get different results if the female was pastel and the male was albino. That may be a stupid question but I'm trying to learn.
Thanks!

If you have a female 66% het albino, I would get a 100% het male, they are not expensive, probably the same amount as your 66% female. This would give you a 66% chance of producing albinos. If you got a 66% het male it would give you a 44% chance of producing albinos. If you got a 50% het albino you would have a 33% chance of producing albinos. It does not matter which sex possesses the trait you are trying to reproduce just that the trait is present in both snakes in a simple recessive breeding.

Nice work on the percentages, chris. I've never sat down and tried to figure all that stuff out. Nice!

To further clarify, your boa has a 66% chance of carrying the albino gene. Since this is a recessive gene, you can't see whether its actally there or not. (The only way to be sure is to breed a full albino to a normal, then ALL of the offspring will be hets). So, your boa has a good chance of carrying the gene (but of course, no guarantees.)

I agree with chris on this one...I would get a known het albino to breed yours with. (If you can't afford a full albino, that is.... ;D). Good luck!

I remember someone posting a link to a website that would run down all the percentages for you. Does anyone have that link, or remember what thread it was posted on?

Maybe this will help, maybe not :)

Your baby was the result of a 100% het to a 100% het breeding. The results from this breeding were
25% Albinos
25% Normal
50% Het for Albino

Because the normals and Hets all "look" the same (unless you are Jeff) there is no way to tell them apart, so they are grouped together in a pool of 66% possible het for albino.

2 out of every 3 babies from a breeding like this ARE 100% het for albino. The trick is that you are playing the odds. To produce albinos, you must purchase the babies that are indeed het. Or as already stated, you must purchase other 100% hets to help the odds.

I just had this scenario happen for me and have several 66% possible hets from a similar breeding.

the website that makes figuring things up for genetics is www.geneticswizard.com It is a fun site to play with.

Yeah. I checked the site out too. It also has an advanced wizard where you can put more traits in such as a hypo het albino X an albino het striped which is what I'm working on but it can be confusing if you aren't straight on which type of trait you are dealing with. (ie. recessive, co-dominant, dominant, etc) :'(

66% x 66% het will give you a 44% chance of producing albinos. Good luck!

What about a F2 Hypo 50 % het for albino breed to an Albino male? & a hypo to an anery ?

What about a F2 Hypo 50 % het for albino breed to an Albino male? & a hypo to an anery ?
              Dave
an f2 hypo 50% het albino to 100% het albino will either give you (if the poss het turns out to be a het)
12.5% WT
25% Het. albino,
12.5%  albino,
12.5% Hypo
25% Hypo het sunglow,
12.5%  Sunglow,

and if the hypo turned out to be a non het

25% wt
25% het albino
25% hypo
25% hypo het sunglow

and hypo to anery would give you

50% het anery
50% hypo het anery

(oops I didn't see it as hypo het albino to ALBINO..this is that break down)
25% Het. albino,
25% albino,
25% hypo het sunglow
25% sunglow

and if the hypo turned out to be a non het it woud be this
50% het albino
50% hypo het sunglow

Thank you..I try and answer most questions like this to help out..Since I had to figure most of it out myself. So I know this stuff is appreciated usually.

Certainly....Some people put some one-liners and it just isn't enough to answer the question properly....You did a great job. When I first started, I was all over breakdowns like this trying to understand it all properly.

Randy,
Thanks a million ! ;D When it comes to genetics....I'm completely ignorant.
Thanks Again,

:'( You are very welcome, I love to help people out on this Forum, it feels much more comfortable and laid back then most places on the net.

Agreed. I asks questions on other forums....just questions, mind you & ended up getting my :-X jumped or made to look as if I was more ignorant than I am :( Thanks, Dave

Hey Randy T.
when ya get some spare time.would ya consider posting a full table of morphs breed to other morphs? as in Albino to anery, hypo to albino....ect? ;D Dave

One more ? ;D What determines the % of an animal as in het ? I know 100% to %100 gives 100%....right? How & where does the other %'s come from? 66%, 50% What has to breed to what to get these %'s? I've breed for years, which you'd NEVER think by my questions. I have a disease I was born with that destroys parts of my memory. I figured if I can get the questions to my post answered, I can write it down. PLUS..no one here will down me for asking ;D This is a great forum :-[ Thanks to everyone who posted. Dave :'( s9.gif
