Terrible day, my gravid albino died. I was in my snake room and noticed my albino contracting, so I called my friend who is half owner on her, and was hoping the due date I had written down was wrong. Well after a minute she just rolled over, so I ripped opened the enclosure and did what I could but she was done. I called my buddy back and told him the bad news, he couldn't believe it. After I calmed down, I decided to open her up to see what happend and if the babys were saveable. I was blown away when I opened her up there were tons of little quarter sized ova well over 100. I am NOT embelishing the amount. This female was loaded with an insane amount of ova. She came into season about three weeks after getting over a respatory infection, I treated her with tylosin. There was no cycling and I didn't even plan on breeding her this season, untill she started her pre ovulation swell with out the help of a male. I put in a willing male and every thing went fine she ovulated, shed, and went to the heat and kept her body temp at 87. Then last night she started moving around and today she died. Do you think the tylosin could have made her start her pre ovulation swell? And do you think the tylosin could have made her produce the massive amount of ova? I didn't take any pics of her so please don't ask to see any. If any one has any info or speculation on this I would appriceate any help.

I am sorry for your loss. But this does bring up a very good question. What medications we give our boas might have adverse effects on breeding....In humans the introduction of many medications can cause a series of problems anywhere from multiple ovulations resulting in multiple child births(putting undue stress on the mothers body), can result in deformity, still birth, braindamage, etc etc..Perhaps we should start having tests run on these medicines so we can have a "doctors" warning label associated with them to avoid the problems that could occur..
Again I am very sorry for the loss you have just gone through.
I'm not a 'professional' but I would think two things. First of all, there's no way I would have bred her that soon after a respritory infection (as tempting as I'm sure it was). I would think that her body was still 'weak' and recovering and would have given her a few months off, possibly the season all together. Secondly, I would agree that the Tylosin more than likely had an effect on her ovulation. And last but not least, how old/large was she? Sorry for your loss my friend, I can only imagine your grief. :-X

Thanks for the posts.
On the other note, I wasn't planning on breeding her this season at all because of the respatory infection, and as I said I never cycled her. It wasn't that I was tempted to breed her she had already swollen up, I felt it was better for her to have a viable litter than slug out. If it was money driving me to breed her I would have used my DH sunglow. Last season she had a litter of slugs and it was very hard on her, I didn't want this to happen to her again and thats why I added a male. All of my boas are treated with the highest regard. This was a very large robust female just under 10 feet, 40 pounds and about 7years old, but there were an unbelevable amount of ova in her. The only thing I could think of that could have done this is the tylosin, I think the massive amount of ova put a major stress on her system, she was so full she couldn't eat. and I believe this is what killed her. I would still be interested to hear any other instance where someone has seen such a massive amount of ova or has any ideas or therory on this situation. This is a major loss to me, she had a co-owner but has always been at my house and I treated her as if she was my personal pet.

That sucks........Man, I would have been in a bad mood alright....probably wouldn't have even posted it.....But you have to remember, life goes on and at least she got to see adulthood and lived a strong successful life up until this point. Good luck with your other boas though, I'm sorry about what happened.
