I have 5 babies still staying at their birth site, I think they are still absorving yolk (A little premature in the birth maybe?). I know they are alive, because they move when I mist them. I have been keeping the area moist so they don't get trapped in the birth mess. I have a posted a couple photos. The litter was small, about live 12 or 13 babies and 3 infertile ova. I haven't got an exact count yet as I am waiting for them to move from the birth site. The Birth was quick too, took the female about 15 or 20 minutes if that.
Anyone else experience this? Babies staying at the birth site for a long time? Should I try removing that infertile ova in the photo, it was stuck to the paper originally so I left it.... Not sure if that was a bad move. Thanks in advance.

That one up front in the first pic don't look right. maybe it's just the way thte pic turned out though. As for what to do, i'm don't have a good answer for you so i'll refrain from giving one. Someone will come along with a good answer.
The two in the back look great though.

Hi,
The one up front has now moved away (that didn't look good). That one did have me a little worried too, but looks fine now. I think they just needed a little extra time, because it looks like the 2 in back are getting ready to move soon. There are still some under the newspaper. It seems like new bodies are popping up everytime some of them move away from the birth site. Maybe there are more babies then what I thought originally (Hopefully!).

Thanks for the posts. I will get some individual photos up most likely tomorrow. There are some shockers in the group. However, I am still waiting on what looks to be 3 boas still at the birth site (Under the newspaper and now 60 hours since birth). I am still keeping them moist hoping they'll leave soon and in perfect health. Sadly one of the boas in the litter who left the birth site earlier today I believe to be deformed in the stomach region. It moves around the cage with ease, but his stomach area is crunched when he moves (I'll show a picture of it tomorrow). I think i'm gonna have to put a little handicap sign on his cage. Maybe someone will know what the problem is from the photo.

Congrats on your litter!! I have a question, because I am a newbie with birthing boas. When the litter is born, after a few hours why not move them to a new rubbermaid with wet paper towels and start trying to help them to clean off? Is there a reason to leave them alone and just mist them till they move? That sac they are in starts to dry right? Seems like I would want to get them out of it. Thanks for any imput. Again, congrats...you got a great looking litter! Andy Federico :(

Hi,
I too am still really new at breeding boas. Only my second successful breeding, but in a way this one seems to be successful and a disaster of a breeding attempt. Here is why... Of the 11 surviving boas, 3 of them are deformed and 1 additional seems to have a skin problem which I am currently working on. All 4 of these boas were the stragglers in the group. The ones who didn't leave the birth site in the first 36 hours and are also the reason I started this post. They are the ones above who are pictured in the photos.
The reason I never removed the babies from the cage and put them in a tub was that some of them seemed premature at their birth and so I wanted them to keep absorbing their yolk. I felt if I tried moving them they may have stressed out and tore their umbilical cords leaving them not fully developed. Well, I can only hope I did the right thing.
If this was out in the wild... More than likely these 4 babies would have never even of had a chance to leave the birth site with their complications or they would have just gotten stuck in the sacs.
The complications on the 4 boas: 2 have bone structure problems (Spine it looks like), 1 has a skin problem (being worked on), and ones eyes are literally coming out of its head. Originally this boa had birth matter stuck to its face and so I soaked the baby boa in warm water and got the matter off. Well, a day later it's eyes appear to be coming out of its head. I thought it was just a shedding ploblem on the boa, under close inspection of the eyes there appears to be blood and parts of the inner eye.
And now for a little good news after all the above bad news... I've attached a photo of the winner of the group below. I can't wait to see his first shed.

Jeff posted some info not tooo long ago about exactly why he DOES leave them at their birth site until they move on their own and did have to do this with a few premies for an extended period of time, I think it was even a week or more..
I believe someone else mentioned a similar experience as well... you're doing fine.
