Heat mat installation question

Lets say have two 11x17 mats to attach under a cage. Do put them side by side on one end or do I stretch it out and put them lenght wise?

I prefer to put the heat on one end. This makes it much easier to attain a good thermal gradient within the cage.
I think placing your heat source lengthwise in the cage
will decrease the range of temps in the cage. In my cages, I generally have an 8-12 degrees difference between the warm and cool sides(90-92 warm 80-82 cool).
