Ok well since I just lost 10 minutes of typing on my last post when the site refreshed all by itself....grrr.... I guess I will make this post shorter.

Anyway, hello. I have been reading these forums for a couple of weeks but just registered to post. I normally hang out on Bob Clark's forums as well.

Question: What all sizes of boaphile cages do you make. All of them I have seen or read about (even on the site) the dimensions seem off to me. Do you make any that are deeper than 2'?

My perfect size for an adult boa (just my preferance) is 6' x 3' x 2'. Do you make anything like this? 2 reasons I have not bought a boaphile is because of the DEPTH first and the HEIGHT second. Expandable ends are great for the length so not that big of an issue. The 2' depth and 11.5" or 17.5" height just doesn't seem like enough to suit my needs. Especially if you add a shelf option to them.

Anyway wanted to get more info on your products.

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,
I have a boaphile cage (4x2x1) and I'm very satisfied with it. It might seem small but its the perfect size cage for boas (BCI) up to 7ft. Adult boas don't need much height in the cage because they are usually on the ground. Those huge wooden cages provide plenty of floor space but they don't hold heat and humidity as well as the boaphile. Also waste fluid gets absorbed in the wood bottom no matter how much water proof it is. You can get an 18 inch high boaphile cage if you like height.

Thanks clone.  I have a 7' boa that is currently in a Vision 632 (huge cage) and she really seems to enjoy all that space, but I have problems with heating and humidity in it.  I'm not sure what snake I am thinking of buying a Boaphile for first but definitely considering changing to them.

As I said though, I guess I don't think like most other snake keepers because I prefer enclosure which are bigger than needed.  I just feel snakes need more room than most other people tend to think.  Yeah, I know it makes me a pain in the butt..:P

Anyway, to answer my question, does Jeff make any cages that are more than 2' deep?  I don't think he does because I can't find any on his site.  I would really love a Boaphile cage that is 3' deep instead of 2.  Especially since I am sure I will be buying a retic within the next 5 years and no matter what anyone says I will always feel that 2' deep is not enough for a 15-20' snake no matter what length the cage is.

Thanks again for the reply.  I'm seriously considering buying his biggest cage.

OH and one more big question: How do you use a thermostat with a boaphile? How do you get the probe inside the cage?

Bill,
They can make 3ft deep cages for special orders but you need to order a minimum of 6 cages.
As far as the thermostat, I use a rheostat instead. I take the probe of a digital thermometer and place it in the cage on the heated side to control the temp of the basking area. As far as the background temp, I use human heat pads and place it under the remaining cage (except under the water bowl). Put it on low setting and the background temp should be 82-85 depending on the room temp. Make sure you check the temp with the probe once in a while. Make sure there is 1/2 inch space under the cage to prevent heat build up. good luck.
