Can anybody tell me how you can define a pastel for sure without proving it?

Well, hate to disappoint you, but there isn't really a way to "prove" a pastel... Since it's polygenic, it's really just a categorization of an observed phenotype... Actually, the odds are that no two pastels are genotypically identical (regarding genes contributing to "pastelism" ;D). So... if an animal looks to be a "pastel" and produced animals that look like "pastels" when bred to another "pastel" it is probably okay to categorize it as a "pastel." Hope this helps... ~Jay
