View Full Version : Carpet as substrate
Greetings to all and amen for this super cool question & anwser area. I have already learned alot. In fact I learned from everyone enough that my son & I just ordered a 422D which bring me to the question abot using carpet for substrate. Since 1/2 the fun for us besides spoiling our columbian is setting up the cage we decided carpet is for us. We have ordered our cage w/ heat inside and wondered if the carpet goes over the heat or not and what is the best carpet? Thanx to all for letting us newbbies absorb your experience and hopefully someday I can give some advice.P.S. how many of you tried typing with a snake crawling on the keyboard. Kinda a challengeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

The heat is fixed to the bottom of the cage - you can't put the carpet under it. Just lay the carpet on top. I've only used carpet (ESU's Lizard Liner - it's like a green felt like carpet that's pretty thin...probably too thin for a boa) for my ball python. I liked it, but as my collection gets bigger it's becoming a bit of a chore to keep cleaning. Make sure you have at least 2 pieces on hand so you can quickly swap a clean piece while cleaning the dirty one. I'd say go for a thick piece so it's not so easy for your boa to move the carpet, but then again you don't want it too thick it lowers your warm side temps.

I use DCL's in all my cages and racks...Awsome stuff
O.K. cool but just what is DCL'S? Where do we get it? Why do you prefer it? We bought a peice of indoor/outdoor carpet but it seems really stiff. I read somewhere in this forum about somebodys baby rubbing her belly raw and we definitely don't want that. Thanx for your input justcage.
